I take selected civil matters, but not all. I work with small business owners to advise them of steps to take to avoid litigation, or to make their position in litigation more secure. Too many small business owners, especially in the construction trades, fail to have clear contracts or payment deadlines with parties they do work for. In Colorado, a party bringing a business debt claim usually cannot recover attorney fees unless such a recovery is provided for in a written contract.

The firm handles selected civil claims for individuals, where I see a legitimate basis for the claim and sufficient money damages to warrant the expense of an attorney. I also handle defense of claims made against individuals, whether a claim for money or for other relief, such as a claim against a client for a statutory no-contact order which can have significant ramifications for the client. My firm has handled complex auto insurance claim issues, and simple disputes between neighbors. At times, the best advice is to show clients why they really do not want to pursue litigation.

• preparation of wills or trusts
• taxes
• worker’s compensation
